Towles beautifully weaves a tale of Rostov’s life in the Metropol hotel, with gentle, humorous, and touching transitions between the small events of hotel life, life long friendships, romance, philosophy, and political turmoil. Count Alexander Rostov finds himself bridging the expanse between two Russias, the one he grew up in as a wealthy and free aristocrat…and the one where he is confined to a hotel for the rest of his life as a punishment by the Bolsheviks. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lottie’s overprotective older sister Felicity (a.k.a “Fliss”) fails to stop the quickie nuptials, so she figures an annulment is the next best thing. This elective process of a group of soviets electing the council above it continues until the national soviet, which is the supreme governing body of the nation. Each soviet has legislative-executive power over the territory it governs. Lastly, the provincial soviets then choose their delegates for the regional soviet. These district soviets in turn elect their provincial soviet. ![]() The local soviets choose their delegates for their district soviet. The idea is identical to that of the Paris Commune. This body holds both legislative and executive power for that city. The process begins when the workers of a city elect their local soviet. ![]() According to Vladimir Lenin and other Marxist theorists, the soviets represent the democratic will of the working class and are thus the embodiment of the dictatorship of the proletariat. The soviets begin at the local level and onto a national parliament-like assembly. Soviet democracy (sometimes council democracy) was a political system in the Soviet Union, in which workers' councils called "soviets" (Russian for "council"), consisting of delegates, formed organs of legislative and executive power. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then back around spring break I actually sat down to finish it. I remember reading those at a very busy time in my life and then putting the book down as it just didn't seem worth using the time to force myself through. The first few chapters of Malice are very slow. Like any good high fantasy, it really had to establish the world and the characters in the first book so we can really get to the good stuff in later books with a strong grasp on the world and also an attachment to the characters. As with many high fantasy series, the first book started out rather slow, in fact from what I recall the whole book was pretty slow. And I'll be the first to admit that it took me a while to actually get around to reading it. He bought me Malice, book one in the epic high fantasy series. My cousin and I are both fantasy lovers, so we agreed on a book exchange- buying each other the first book in a series and then promising to read the book that we were given. Epic fantasies have always been right down my alleyway, and boy, this series definitely falls into that category. ![]() |
